James D. Givens, MD, FACS, ASBSDr. Givens is a Graduate of Indiana University, where he was a University Division Scholar from 1970-1973. He completed his graduate studies at Vanderbilt University Medical School in Nashville, TN, where he was first introduced to Bariatric Surgery. Georgetown University Medical Center provided him the exposure to general and specialized surgeries while he completed his Residency.He has been Board Certified in General Surgery since 1989, and completed re-certification in 1997. He received the Physicians Recognition Award from the American Medical Association in 1998. While serving in the US Air Force, Dr. Givens was the Chief of Flight Medicine at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, SC, and the Principal Medical Officer for Aircraft Accident Investigations for Ninth Air Force Headquarters. He also completed the Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, GA in 1981. Dr. Givens is focusing on the Laparoscopic weight loss surgery including the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and the Lap-Band. These procedures are performed exclusively at Lexington Medical Center, a hospital that has made a commitment to provide the highest quality care for bariatric patients. He has a particular interest in Laparoscopic Surgery, and has received post-graduate training in this specialized field. His practice is one of the largest Laparoscopic Surgery practices in the area.
