Roux-en-Y OverviewWhile there are several types of weight-loss surgery, the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is considered the most effective. With this procedure, a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to a small pouch that allows food to bypass the lower stomach. This bypass reduces the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs. Gastric Bypass patients generally recover for two to three days in the hospital and follow-up in the office with weekly checkups during the first month. Routine visits are then made every three to six months to ensure that the amount of weight loss is healthy during the initial year after the surgery.
