Keys to Success

Jan 18, 2023

Everyone’s journey following bariatric surgery looks different, but these are a few basic keys to success:

  1. Meet nutrition goals- the dietitians recommend that you eat at least 60 grams of protein and drink 64 ounces of water each day. Try not to get bogged down with all the diet information on the internet. Start by meeting your protein and fluid needs. Avoid high-calorie or sugary beverages and snacks.
  2. Stay active- the best workout is one that you enjoy. If you don’t have a workout routine, try something new, such as: walking, following YouTube exercise videos, or joining a class at a fitness center. When you find an exercise routine you enjoy, it is easier to stay consistent.
  3. Follow up- after surgery, go to all your scheduled follow-up appointments, even if you are doing well. If you feel the need to come see us sooner than your scheduled appointment, call us at 803-936-3300.
  4. Maintain- if you have reached your goal weight, don’t slip back into old habits. Exercise and a healthy diet are important for more than just weight loss- these habits you are working hard to establish also benefit your overall health and mental well-being.
  5. Find social support- having bariatric surgery comes with a lot of changes. Identify the family members and friends in your life who are supportive of you and talk to them often. You can also attend support group with us, where you will hear from other people on a weight loss journey. Support group dates are announced here on our website.
