Nutrition on a Budget

Jun 21, 2022
As a dietitian, one of the most common excuses I hear for not eating healthy is "healthy food is expensive." I beg to differ with this statement. Sure, food can be expensive. However, there are ways to save money.

Tips:
1. Choose fruits and vegetables that are in season. If you feel that it would be wasteful, consider buying frozen fruits and vegetables without any additives (i.e. sugar, salt)
2. Plan ahead and pack your lunch instead of eating out.
3. Buy whole foods instead of highly processed foods. Highly processed foods can be cheaper in the moment, but these foods tend to be very addicting and lead to overeating. Therefore, you do not end up saving money.
4. Buy food in bulk and consider freezing foods or making extras for leftovers.
5. Check sales adds prior to creating your shopping list.

Example:
Big Mac Meal w/ fries and a sweet tea from McDonald's
This meal would cost $10.14 to feed one person(1,000 calories)

https://www.skinnytaste.com/turkey-burgers-with-zucchini/ ($8.07 for 5 burgers- 161 calories)
https://www.skinnytaste.com/air-fryer-baked-sweet-potato/ ($3.50 for 5 sweet potatoes- 146 calories)
with Ice water ($0 for 4 cups)
This meal would cost $11.57 to feed a family of 5 (307 calories per person)

Do the work and you will not only save money, you will also save calories!
