A key strategy for many therapists in helping patients through bouts of depression and anxiety is discussing the importance of “purpose”. Often in challenging times, we do not do well with times where we dwell in our thoughts or overthink. So, a key point is identifying a distraction strategy in which a person finds a new purpose. This can include finding a new hobby, volunteering, coaching, or becoming more active in a community such as a church or religious group.
Often to heal, we must help others heal. Whether you are struggling with emotional eating when you are bored or severe depression when you are at home alone, a major key is keeping yourself busy and out of the house.
I have talked to a few volunteers here at the hospital and they say they volunteer not only because they enjoy helping others, but it gives them an opportunity to socialize, get out of the home, a schedule and sense of accomplishment, but more than anything, it creates a sense of purpose.
As you go into the new year, I hope this inspires you to step out of your comfort zone and attempt to do something NEW, you just never know, you may enjoy it and you may find yourself more fulfilled after doing so.
